Sassnitz-Mukran, May 12, 2025 - The successful train connection to the ferry port of Mukran on the island of Rügen will be continued in the 2025 summer season. From 24 May to 18 October, an extended timetable will once again provide a direct connection to the ferry to Bornholm. Hanseatische Eisenbahn GmbH (HANS) was once again awarded the contract on 9 April following the conclusion of the tender process - for the first time with a term of three years (2025 - 2027).
Together with VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH, Mukran Port and HANS, the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ensures seasonal transport. The direct connection is an environmentally friendly, congestion-free alternative to travelling by car - especially for holidaymakers from Berlin, Hamburg, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Minister of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Dr. Wolfgang Blank emphasises the importance of the connection: “Holidaymakers can once again travel to Denmark quickly and easily this summer - thanks to the extended train timetable to the ferry from 24 May to 18 October 2025. The connection on Monday is new. As in previous years, the trains will also run on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We are thus creating climate-friendly connections that fit in well with many people's holiday plans.”
Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV, emphasises the positive response from passengers: “The positive feedback from passengers last year is a clear signal that travellers are increasingly opting for climate-friendly alternatives. The HANS train connection directly to Mukran Port in the summer months is a small but important part of the state's mobility initiative and makes public transport in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern even more attractive and sustainable for both the population and holidaymakers. Join us this year and take advantage of the additional transport services!”
Transport Minister Dr. Wolfgang Blank also sees the offer as a forward-looking measure: “The rising passenger numbers confirm the growing demand for sustainable public transport services to tourist destinations. We want to encourage more people to switch to the railway. Instead of being stuck in traffic jams, we are focusing on strong local transport that benefits the climate and strengthens the regional economy.”
Henry Forster, Managing Director of Mukran Port, emphasises the importance of the port: “Our location has a modern, multimodal infrastructure and has long since become an important hub for tourist transport to and from Germany - especially to Scandinavia. The first long-term, multi-year contract with HANS takes into account the growing needs of the market and is an important step towards strengthening sustainable mobility. At the same time, we are making an important contribution to the development of tourism in the region and to the economic development of Vorpommern. Last but not least, the direct connection also creates good conditions for potential future ferry services - for example to Sweden - for which Mukran Port continues to offer an ideal starting point.”
René Haber-Henning, Managing Director of HANS, adds: “The fact that the ferry port shuttle is running for the third year in a row and has increasing passenger numbers shows that there is a demand for this service. We are delighted that the travel chain with public transport works and is used by so many travellers.”
