Mukran Port as logistics hub in international project business: Trombone Cooler for Norwegian silicon factory

Sassnitz-Mukran, 20 February 2019 - On Saturday (16 February 2019) the loading of the components of a coil cooler was completed at the Mukran Port. The cargo consists of six modular process frames (skids), built-in parts and construction site equipment. A total of 600 tons of material were loaded and then shipped to Norway.

Kraftanlagen München GmbH has been commissioned to construct a cooling plant for a silicon factory in Holla, Norway. However, the on-site construction site only offers limited space. Production is therefore modular. The Mukran Port was chosen as the location for the pre-assembly of the heavy-duty parts, also due to its direct deep-water access to the open sea.

With its generous production and storage areas, the port also offers ideal conditions for the production of the huge individual parts. In addition to manufacturing the skids, prefabricated channels were also mounted on a steel frame and welded. The skids alone weigh between 70 tons and 100 tons each and are twice the size of a truck. The finished channels weigh 33 tons each.

"With the Mukran Port, we have found a location that offers us the best possible conditions for realizing our project. We were completely convinced by the Mukran Port's spacious storage and production areas, its professional cooperation and access to the open sea," says Frank Schuster, Project Manager at Kraftanlagen München GmbH, about the conditions in the Mukran Port.

"Kraftanlagen München GmbH's decision to use the Mukran Port as a production site for a project in Norway shows that we are one of the most important maritime industrial centres and logistics hubs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. When it comes to project business, generous and heavy-duty areas are particularly important. The Mukran Port has 170 hectares of land available for production and storage," says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port. nbsp]In addition to handling heavy goods, the range of services offered by Mukran Port also includes warehouse logistics and the organisation of transports.

The cargo is now on its way to Holla in Norway. In the coming weeks the work in Norway will be continued and the fully assembled cooler will be handed over to the end customer until Easter.

"Destination Rügen - Cruise & Ferry Network" launches - Know-how to strengthen passenger shipping on Rügen is bundled

Sassnitz-Mukran, February 13, 2019 - The association "Destination Rügen - Cruise & Ferry Network" was officially founded on Monday (11 February 2019). This is the next step to strengthen the tourism region Rügen. The association wants to contribute to raising the profile of Germany's largest island, the neighbouring region and the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to sharpen the tourist profile vis-à-vis the ferry and cruise shipping companies. To this end, all local actors are to be involved.

In order to offer cruise passengers an attractive shore leave, the bundling of the tourist offers of Rügen and its surroundings is becoming increasingly important. In the search for new destinations, the smaller Baltic Sea ports are increasingly moving into the focus of the individual market shipping companies, which account for 25 percent of calls in the Baltic Sea region. Through "Destination Rügen - Cruise & Ferry Network", the local economy, the tourism industry and local shipping companies are now more closely networked.

The transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience among the association members integrates the regional tourism destinations into the marketing and should lead to a supplement as well as a further development of the tourist offer structures. The island of Rügen and the Hanseatic city of Stralsund would like to present themselves to international tourists in a more attractive way, and transit tourists should also be attracted for stays of several days on the Baltic Sea island.

As a maritime service provider, Mukran Port has been involved in tourism development on Rügen and the surrounding area for some time. With the election of Thomas Langlotz, Commercial Director of Mukran Port, as the first chairman of the association, the previous commitment of the port is honoured and further consolidated.

"The association offers us all the opportunity to combine the interests of the ferry companies established in Mukran and the booming cruise industry with those of the regional economy," says Thomas Langlotz. "Together we can both create a welcome culture for day guests and increase the attractiveness of the island and the region for longer stays. Important are offers that attract passengers and tourists to Rügen even outside the season", the new chairman sums up the goals of the association.

Successful start to the year: Handysize freighter trio in the Mukran Port

Sassnitz-Mukran, January 31, 2019 - For the first time in the history of the port, three Handysize general cargo ships were handled at the same time in the Mukran Port. Handysize are bulk carriers with a carrying capacity of 15,000 to 35,000 tons. The port has also proven its efficiency in the general cargo and bulk goods sector. The modern general cargo ship "Haaga" with LNG propulsion made its maiden call at the Mukran Port Terminal. The general cargo from Russia was transported by rail to the hinterland. The organisation and execution of the block train on-carriage was in the hands of the port's own railway company Baltic Port Rail Mukran GmbH. The other two ships, the "Nordschelde" and "Charlie", served the local import and export industry. Mukran Port was already able to draw a positive balance for the year 2018, which was characterised by offshore and bulk cargo handling. After this successful start to the year with intensive work at the transhipment terminals, the port operator can look to the financial year 2019 with confidence. "We assume that the current high workload is a sign for the further development of Mukran Port in 2019. We intend to further expand our good project business and at the same time drive industrial development in the port. We also anticipate an increase in the overall volume of cargo handled in the agricultural sector, among others," says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port.

The project will accompany Mukran Port over the next three years.
Small and medium-sized ports in the southern Baltic Sea cooperate in the project "SOUTH BALTIC TRANSPORT LOOPS".
The main focus is on the development and expansion of the sea-side development in the partner ports, with a special consideration and optimization of the respective hinterland connections.
"With this step and the experience already gained as a partner in two previous EU projects, we would like to advance the current development of the Mukran Port towards a modern universal port," says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port, at the conclusion of the contract.
The Interreg project is largely funded by the European Regional Development Fund. In addition to lead partner Mukran Port, ports from Denmark, Poland and Sweden are involved in the project.

Mukran Port for strengthening the tourism region Rügen

Sassnitz-Mukran, Dezember 07, 2018 - The island of Rügen wants to become even more interesting for cruise passengers by bundling the tourist offers. This is the conclusion of the networking event "Destination Rügen - Cruise & Ferry Networking", to which Mukran Port invited passengers on Thursday (6 December). Numerous representatives of the tourism industry on the island of Rügen and the surrounding area took part in the event. The main focus was on finding ideas to sharpen the tourist profile of the island with a view to the cruise lines. With his participation and a greeting Dr. Stefan Kerth, district administrator of the district Vorpommern-Rügen, underlined the importance of this request.
Individual market shipping companies with smaller ships account for around 25 percent of ship calls in the Baltic Sea region. In the search for alternative destinations for stop-overs away from the major cruise ports, the smaller Baltic Sea ports are gaining in importance. Rügen, Germany's largest island, should also benefit from this. At the initiative of Mukran Port, representatives from politics, local business, the tourism industry and shipping companies came together to discuss marketing strategies for the Rügen region and the port as a cruise location. The topic was presented to the participants by Yana Grundke, Cruise Coordinator Mukran Port, Hartmut Beyer, HPC Hamburg Port Consulting GmbH and Thomas Langlotz, Commercial Director Mukran Port. The common goal is to bundle the tourist offers of Rügen and the surrounding area in order to be able to offer passengers an attractive shore leave.
Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port, called for close cooperation between the local tourism industry and its associations and societies. "We have an increased demand on the part of national and international shipping companies for regular calls in Mukran. With this initiative we want to stimulate a new welcome culture for day guests. Together we should examine which offers the island already has and which ones still have to be developed."

On the following traditional Mukran-Port-Nikolausparty with Port-Networking of the Port Sassnitz Mukran e.V. in the "Alte Zollhalle" the discussions between politics, economy and tourism were deepened in a maritime and relaxed atmosphere.

New ferry connection in Mukran

Sassnitz-Mukran, September 07, 2018 - The danish shipping company Molslinjen took over the only direct ferry connection between Mukran and Roenne on 01 September 2018. This was the first change of operator on the route after 150 years. The shipping company Molslinjen offers the connection under the name Bornholmslinjen. The traditional area of passenger shipping in Mukran is to regain importance in the future and boost tourism on both islands. To illustrate these goals, the shipping company had a new ship built especially for this route. The 158 meter long "Hammershus" offers space for 720 passengers and thus twice as many as was possible with the old operator, the passenger car capacity also increases. "In recent years, we have proven that tourism and an industrial and business location are not mutually exclusive. Thanks to our favourable geographical location and the existing infrastructure, large passenger ships can also call at the port in addition to huge installation vessels for the construction of wind turbines," emphasised Thomas Langlotz, Commercial Director of Mukran Port. In addition to year-round ferry traffic, 5 times a week in summer and 3 times a week in winter, ticket prices also fall significantly.
